Sports Injuries
At Colchester Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic Ltd., we recognise that injuries relating to exercise and sport are not restricted to the elite athlete. This is why we treat and rehabilitate athletes of all ages and expertise, form the recreational runner (especially beginners, or the Sunday golfer), all the way through to elite athletes including those who represent Great Britain at their sport.
Sports Injuries are always unwelcome and many of them repetitive. As a result, our treatments focus not only on the present injury, but also on the reasons for injury, and we aim to provide strategies for eliminating the causes of the presenting problem. Treatment will always be tailored to the individual, taking account of their treatment goals, and plans for future levels of activity.
The team at Colchester Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic Ltd. successfully treat participants of an enormous number of different sports and activities, dealing with any injury from a mild sprain to cruciate ligament injury, including repetitive, niggling injuries such as runners knee and tennis elbow. Throughout the team, we have varied levels of experience of participating in competitive and recreational sport, so have great empathy and sympathy with the injured athlete striving to get back to health!
One particular area in which we can help you is the “warm up/warm down”. A good warm up should prepare the cardiovascular (CV) system for further activity, and will affect the musculoskeletal, nervous and CV systems by increasing the biochemical activity within the body. While there is much debate about whether a warm up helps to prevent injury, there continues to be clinical and experimental support for a link between warm up and improved performance (and who doesn’t want that?).
Stretching regimes for the athlete are also regularly included in a Physiotherapy session. Flexibility training is important to include in your exercise regime for several reasons. First, it encourages normal range of movement at the joints, preventing muscle imbalances, and consequently muscle weakness or pain. Secondly it will contribute to reducing muscular injury and reduce the risk of joint pain resulting from muscle imbalance.
Many people come to us after an operation, or a long lay off from their sport, in order that we can ensure their musculoskeletal system is ready for the increased loads it is about to encounter.
